*Don't reduce it to 3rd term

YOLA — SENATE Committee Chairman on Foreign Affairs, Professor Jibril Aminu, has appealed to Nigerians not to  allow the needed constitutional review to be reduced to a mere third term agenda.
Aminu also condemned the recent religious riot in Maiduguri, Borno State, where many lives were lost and properties  destroyed saying it was uncalled for.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Yola on Monday, he said there are fundamental needs to review the  constitution to meet the democratic demands and needs of Nigerians.
He, however, expressed concern that some individuals have reduced the constitutional review to an avenue to prosecute  the vexed issued of third term.

According to him the current legal document the country is using has been identified to have serious structural defect,  hence could not meet the yearning and aspiration of the people.
However, I would like to appeal to our people in the media, academic, politicians and all those holding meetings for the  constitution not to allow anybody to direct them into this nonsense issue of third term because ther is a lot of things to  change in the constitution he said.
Aminu, who highlighted areas that needed adjustment, mentioned the immunity clause, revenue allocation, resource  control and others.

According to him, the 1999 constitution was desperately done, leaving vital issues of national importance out, hence  there was urgent need for amendment.
“Look at the issue of immunity, people who swore to defend law now claim to be above the law because of the  immunity. Do you know that today the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives are not  members of the National Council of State?”, he queried.
Aminu regretted that instead of the politicians to agitate their minds on something important to the people, they are  occupied with the purported third term agenda.
